I saw a comment a few days ago and it's been bothering me ever since. Someone had posted on facebook that balance beam would be more interesting if it was done over a shark tank. So does this person not appreciate what these young women are doing on a beam that is four inches wide and four feet off the ground? Does this person want to see these young women fall, crash and get hurt more often? And if the balance beam performances are boring because the most difficult skills that can be done are made to look like just walking and chewing gum, then that in itself is amazing. When I practice handstands on the beam, I get so nervous and I have to think about pushing those feelings out of my mind. Clear my head, breathe, then make attempt. I completely understand the mental issues that may occur when these young Olympians perform a full twisting back tuck and land it!
I truly hope this person was just being sarcastic. Never the less, I'd like to see her just walk and turn on the beam gracefully.
